NESPOLI MUSHROOMS: THE HISTORY

The birth in 1943

In the post-war period, in 1943, Mrs. Rosa Nespoli, with a good dose of entrepreneurial enthusiasm, opened a shop of early produce in Via Spaventa, in the San Leonardo district of Bergamo.

At her shop, you could find top-quality fruit and tropical specialties like kiwis, bananas, and small fruits; those were years when finding fresh fruit from other countries was not easy at all.

It wasn't easy for some families to bring food home either, but Mrs. Rosa was enterprising and started her business by trying to differentiate it from those already present in the city.

The Nespoli Sisters

The business was passed on to the three daughters, known as the Nespoli sisters.
Faced with a time of great change, they were not discouraged. Instead, they diversified the business and turned it into the most renowned shop in Bergamo for seasonal fresh mushrooms.

They gradually moved away from selling fresh produce—the very products that had once made this “fruit shop of delicacies” famous. (If you're lucky enough to meet him, my father might tell you the story of his first visit here, when my mother was pregnant with me. That day, he bought two kiwis.)

The change was almost inevitable, as supermarkets began offering the same products, making it harder for small shops to compete.

Nespoli Funghi Becomes a Brand

In 1993, my parents—Moscheni Giampietro and Lidia—already entrepreneurs known in the city for running fruit shops and cafés in the Città Alta, took over the business, which had been closed for a year, and brought it back to its former glory.

The famous Nespoli sisters had shut down due to roadworks and paving renovations in the old part of town.

The decision to take over the business was made by a show of hands, around the dinner table.

Not long after, I graduated and became a certified mushroom expert (perito micologo), and here I am—Michela.

This is how our family passion for mushrooms and truffles was born.
We specialized in fresh products: when mushrooms are in season, you’ll find them at Nespoli Funghi. Black truffles are available all year round, and white truffles, when in season, are simply a must.

Two generations have now managed this very special business, and we’re preparing for a third.
My daughters are already showing signs of their commercial talents.

It’s not unusual to find all of us here, working side by side—three generations, united by passion.

I cross my fingers and hope to far exceed the 80-year legacy that already defines our story.

The Four Seasons: Our Shop and Its Transformation

Our business is seasonal.

Our shop changes with the seasons.

Spring – Dried and Frozen Mushrooms

In spring, we bring a splash of color and try to be present no matter what.
You’ll find us in the mornings, always smiling and ready to help, although without the usual eye-catching displays.
You might even spot us in a town square—we actively take part in various festivals and fairs.

Summer – The First Fresh Mushrooms and Local Fairs

From June to August, if the day isn’t too hot and the season is generous, your eyes will likely fall on dozens of crates of fresh mushrooms beautifully displayed.

It’s also the season for wild blueberries, and the time we attend events like Pasturo and the Sagra delle Sagre.

In Autumn – Fresh Mushrooms Take Center Stage

In autumn, fresh mushrooms are always available in our shop—provided Mother Nature is kind.

During these months, mushrooms are displayed outside because the weather is cool enough that they won’t suffer.
So if you're passing through Bergamo and see dozens of crates full of fresh mushrooms, don’t be alarmed—it’s just us, trying to tempt your appetite.

In Winter – White Truffles Are a Must

At the end of November, as autumn fades, we get swept up in the magic of Christmas.

The shop transforms: the window is decorated and the Christmas lights are turned on. We become a true boutique of flavors.

White truffles are always in stock—this is their time to shine, alongside our jars of mushrooms preserved in oil.

Our Christmas boxes have, for years, remained sealed with no indication of what’s inside, keeping the magic of surprise intact.

We also prepare gift packages for companies.

The Trade Fair Experience

Stepping outside our four walls has never scared us. Over the years, we've taken part in markets across half of Europe—Paris, Munich, the French Riviera, England, and of course, our beautiful Italy.

Bringing Italian products abroad and seeing customers appreciate our work brings immense satisfaction and makes us proud of the effort put into preparation and organization.

We've been guests at the Sagra delle Sagre for decades.
Mercatanti in centro, held in the heart of Bergamo, allows us to spend time with people from all over Europe.

Becoming a permanent business at first was a challenge, but lately, it’s the foreign customers who come to us—or ask us to ship our products to them...
